My map of this city

My city has two maps.

One that Google shows in the cellular phones.
The one that is spread on the walls of the office,
Yes! that's the first kind that I am talking about.
And then, there is another one that runs in my head.
It is as prompt and accurate as Google map itself.
It speaks with the same matter of fact voice
However, it chokes from time to time due to some strange reason..
Is there a connection issue there too?

Google map says, "Drive straight onto T Road for 500 meters and turn left"
My map says, "It is actually called the H Road! Handhold Road, that is.
Do not listen to Google. It does not know most of the things still.
Walk slow. Hold the fingers that slipped out of a sweaty palm, by that ancient gate that perhaps never opened."

My journey around the city often takes me through the DD Road
And I never let the Google map speak.
I don't need the Google map here. I know every nook and corner of this road.

From the places of worship, to the places where they make music.
However the voice in my head does not stop instructions.
"Welcome! You have reached the W Road.
The road for Waiting.
Especially at the nights, when the shadows become longer than everyone.
When the shadows make mistakes of knocking every other door, looking for you!
Choose the name. Don't delay. The road awaits."

In the B Road much ahead,

Its forever winters for me.
Leaves tremble seeing me and the branches let them go.
They come rushing to me and whisper as if they are co-conspirators.
"This road, must be named the Road of the Lost Kiss! It cant be called anything else.
Its a strange world in which they unnecessarily give heavy names to these beautiful paths.
You must find the kiss here by that cherry tree, near the parking.
Make sure it gets its real name.
Do it! Before you go away forever,
Turning left."

Empty kisses

I want to kiss your forehead one more time before I die.

I kissed your forehead many a times,
To calm you, to ward away your nightmares,
to take away your worries
I could not, perhaps ..
But nonetheless, I want to try one more time,
Before I die.

I have grown up in the years that you have left me.
I mean, I have learnt to live with questions, without seeking an answer.
That's what growing up is all about, isnt it?
When you understand that you will never be answered, you stop asking.
You will never know why some people stopped loving you...
Why some of them could not carry themselves to love..
Why some could go away and never came back?

I also learnt to live with;
Why did you have to go?
Why cant you come back?
Why so soon?
I don't ask them anymore. I live with them.

I have accepted this empty city that I hug every night.
I feel her emptiness in my heart.
The city complete with her towers of empty matchboxes,
 Stacked one upon another.
They sway late in the summer nights in complete denial of the loneliness they feel.
They want you to believe they do not want to touch each other,
They do not even want to lean.
As if, they really want to remain erect,
As it this strong wind is indeed a bother!
They keep their pride,
never risk letting anyone know about that pain of emptiness ..

Much like the ones that occupy them.

But I am tired of fighting this wind tonight
And want to sway hard!
So hard that I can fall...
weightless,
I want to feel light again.
I want to come upon you to kiss your forehead.
Once again...
Before I die.

Indiscretions of a book

A book fell in love!
Blasphemous!!
courtesy:Google

THAT was not, definitely not meant to be!

It was never expected of it.
You know.. how you never expect sands to build a home on their own
Or how you never expect storms to facilitate your journey
Much the same, you do not expect a book to fall in love!
Books are not supposed to.
That too a book of this nature.

A serious, no-nonsense, intellectually stimulating book and it's knowledge-filled pages,
Each page inspired awe! Invoked respect!
But seldom, love!

Don't get me wrong! You can love books!
Some books can be loved
For some books you can use the word weakness
They are nice, sweet, petite books.
They come across as vulnerable.
They come wanting to be tucked below your pillow forever.
Not this one!

You don't expect anyone to love a book of this volume, of this nature.
You read. Close. Stay away.
Quote at times from memory.
Completely out of context, mostly!
Does not matter
Who else has read it anyway!

You generally maintain a respectful distance.

And to think, this book will fall in love!!
Pure blasphemy!!

But that happened.

The book with no gender,
Not even a single page on romance,
That confusing, respect-evoking, distant-natured book
Fell in love!

Games we play

I grew up in a small city.

And playing outdoors was the magic pill to combat long summer days.
Once out of home, we quickly discussed games to play that day.
We looked for puddles to jump.
Or bushy guava trees to climb.
We ran from one street to another in groups.
Giggling and talking at the same time.
All of us.
Together.
We ran like gushing water from pipes!
We loved summer holidays!

My favourite game was hopscotch.
Connected squares or rectangles were drawn on tar roads
With a chalk or a broken piece of tile.
We raised our mid length frocks a little
And jumped one legged.
In summer mornings on the dark tarmac road,
The white marks almost stared at you.
Almost told you about boundaries but fell just a bit short,
Because in hopscotch, it was easy to go past them.

As we hopped to avoid one box or the other
And to definitely avoid all the lines drawn, in either red or white,
We panted and laughed with joy, and prayed that the other failed to do so.
We cursed each other in jest.
"May you put a step in the boundary!"
"May I come first!" We giggled!
Played pranks to break each other's concentration.
We looked at awe at those who finished the whole game at one go,
Who reached home,
Without once going out of those connected boxes.
For reaching home was certainly not easy.
Balancing oneself all the time on one leg,
And hopping towards the "home",
which was either at the centre or at the end,
Reaching home was always difficult!
You had to go past all the boxes, one by one.
Never stepping on the lines and never putting both the feet on the floor.
We wiped our knotted brows straight,
Only when we reached home, in a hopscotch square.
We smiled at our friends waiting for their turns outside the box then.

Many years later, it seems I still play hopscotch.

I  carefully hop through some days, never touching the glaring lines,
Although they shine bright to catch my attention.
Not letting my dice fall in the wrong box and never getting out of the box, anyway.
(What was the hurry to get in the box, I wonder!
Was it the game itself?)
Avoiding dates, jumping through some, to the next.
Making sure I do not take note of the day,
Or making sure others do not catch me taking a note at least.
I untie my knotted brow once those days pass.
I raise my head and smile at a friend.
And I nod my head, as I see her getting into that enticing game of boxes.

What is it with that habit called love!

Have you been loved without being liked?
I have. For a long time.
Or was I just told that I was loved?
I remain confused about it.

If I think about it carefully,  I was told I was loved, when probed.
I was told yes, the times that he did not get angry about being asked.
Why did I ask? because it was never apparent otherwise.
Neither in words. Nor in deeds.
He did a very good job in hiding any love that he may have had  for me.
I never had to doubt otherwise.
I sometimes think he said yes because it is difficult to tell people they are not loved once you have played the love rituals with them.
You have gone through all the things generally associated with love, without loving.
You feel ashamed to admit that at times.
Even to yourself.
So you say, "What kind of question is that? Sleep now!"

On the other hand, it was made very clear that I was not liked.
Almost everything about me was disapproved.
Or everything that I had become instead of what he wanted me to become.
He was working on molding me just fine, when my bones rebelled.
"Rebellious to the bone!", my mother often said with a regret in her voice.
She could not mold me. Nor could he.
He could never tell me 'though that he did not like me.
I had to feel it. Every day.
I wish he did.
I wish he had a way of knowing he could love me, although he did not like me.
May be he loved me in his own way.
After all love is often a habit. One gets used to loving people.

Loving is not a sign of liking anyone.
Much like how breathing is not a sign of living.
(If you want to know if one still lives, check your heart, not her breathing.
But then I am diverting here...lets talk of love.)
You love because you have always loved some.
Have you noticed that you can love just like that?
You do not ponder if the person "deserves" love.
You get love without deserving it.
You love people who least deserve it.
Love has nothing to do with rightful entitlement.
It is not won. as a child I resented that you can not.
As an adult i am stoic about it.

You also love some people because you have always loved them.
You do not remember not loving them ever.
It is like a memory which transcends this life.
Even if you have not seen them for years,
Even if they have changed beyond recognition,
Even if they were not the one you really loved,
You just love them.
You have not explored any other emotion for them in your heart.
It is strange to think any other emotion can be associated with them in the long run.
Like a round polished stone-ball, that always settle at the base of a mountain,
They occupy the base of your heart, where love resides.
I still look up to the sky to have  a glimpse of that question mark.
He still murmurs "where are you?" when sad,
though we both know we don't love our current avatars.
We have changed beyond recognition.

I did not like all the people I loved.
Coming to think of it, I loved more people than I ever liked.
I have found liking people much more difficult.
How can you like that  ever curious aunt of yours, who wants to "know" at the cost of hurt.
Or that judgmental cousin, who often disapproves your dresses, your ideology, your friends.
Although you have been mad at them from time to time,
You have largely known no other emotion for them than love.

Loving is much easier than liking, you see!
You don't have to justify it.
You don't even have to think why.
You just love.
Love is after all the most truant of all the emotions.
It is permitted its mischief.
It is permitted to sit on top of tomb and sing eternal poetry of love.
It is permitted to look for that one small pendant in the heaps of rubble when houses fall to the ground during wars.
It is permitted to go around the whole world looking for love and come back to the same old self and stand in front of a mirror and say with much vanity, with head a bit tilted upwards..

"You know what! Let them say whatever they want!
I love you!"

A bit easier

It should always be a bit easier than that.
You know what I mean.
I mean easier than that algebraic equation that stumped you,
No matter how many times you practiced.
Or, that theorem that you could not prove.
You just could not get to QED, quod erat demonstrandum.
It should be easier than that.
Always.

It should be easier than reaching that village near Chilika lake,
The village whose name I can not remember.
It should really be easier than remembering that name too.
That village from which Jaai left as a young married girl,
And returned as a goddess.
You are not to put your feet in the water,
unless you lift some water with cupped hands to put on your head.
Or the waves of the sea may get in the lake and take your boat to the sky,
Much like what it did to the boat of Jaai.
Much like how your own emotions try to drown you sometimes.
They are no less than the waves of Chilika.
Crossing a lake should be easier than that.
And less scary too!

It should have been easier to go the villages across Bhilangana river.
Instead there was just a wooden bridge that creaked below our feet.
A mountain stood right across the river.
We should have been able to walk on the plains a bit before we climbed,
But no!
We had to climb in the last rays of the sun,
And cross a few hills before we reached the village where we would sleep.
The village, where only women and children lived with very old men.
Finding a place to sleep, to rest should be much easier than that.

It should be easier to say, "I miss you!"
Easier than forming a convoluted sentence about fear and distance and reverence.
Easier than rumbling something about other's demand on your time and your constraints,
It should be easier to say,
"Hold my hand", "Walk with me", "Don't let me go..not yet!"
But its often not.
It should be easier to express love,
Easier than expressing anger.

And,
It should be easier to stay, than coming back again and again to the same shore.
Alas! it is not.
