Letter to the Lost and Found Department

He had to get down two stations before mine!
The face that I found sleeping when I boarded the train.
I wish he slept all through.
I would not have had to steal glances at his reflection in the window mirrors, otherwise.

I got onto the train thinking its going to be a long journey at the end of the day!
And now I want to go back to that 8.45 train every day!
Or does he ride the train only on Sundays?
Or probably that was the only day!
Was he coming back from a weekend trip?
He fell asleep, remember?
He had a backpack for sure! a black one.
What did it have? Camera? Or just clothes?

In between, the person seated between us, got down from the train, but I could not bring myself to casually slide towards him.
I want to kick myself for that! I am always like that!
I still regret not kissing in Malaysia and not going to Granada with one South American friend, who asked.

I tell myself every time, "You don't have much time!
You can't afford to live in regret!
Come on! Show some initiative."
But alas! who is listening to me? Not me at least!

I have a feeling he stole a few glances too.
I know, I know, it could just be my wishful thinking.
But what’s so bad in thinking he also regretted not sliding casually towards me?
Or not being a little closer while tying his shoelaces?
Or not missing his usual stop that day?
May be he is in the last compartment of the train tonight, looking for me.

Whats so bad in thinking he just can’t fall asleep today!

Images of the year

Flitting images of a year that has just gone by
Crowd my mind as I lie in the box that I have dreaded for the year before.
They create a mural made of small mosaics,
Much like that magic garden in a city where some loved ones live.

A particular step of an old forgotten monument framed by crumbling walls,
with a book in my hand,
It did not have to be so forsaken, had it got the king it was meant for.
The king could not come back, once he left.
He longed for it for 4 years,
The building has been mourning him since.

A crowded street, an excited group, a riot of smells and kaleidoscope of images.
Rushing through to the end of the street and then tracing back one's own footstep craving for some more....

A temple safely tucked away in a silent corner of a bustling street for a millennium.
The monkeys that climbed down its walls to give company to the lone visitors.

A serene lake which held the sky and the mountains in the horizon,
The same way that we hold our friends in distant places in our hearts.
Their images are as unflinching as that of the mountain in that tranquil lake.
The world walks around. The image stays.
Except may be on clouded days, when the water can't reflect anything.

Then the rain that seemed it would never stop and a dark blue umbrella that made a personal cloud,
Under that big dark cloud that covered the sky.
It reminded me of another monsoon afternoon, which left a group of friends so badly drenched,
It seemed we all had given in to the might of the rain.
It always makes me wish that we gave in to the might of rain more often.
I wish we could believe, life does not melt away when we stand in rain.

Then that group of laughing adults in a lush green ground that included a teenager
Their laughter attracted curious looks from the locals, in the mid-day heat.
It was an odd group whose features varied as far and wide as they could.

The stories one heard during the year.
The stories that could not make space in popular history books
The stories of hope, the stories of defeat,
The stories stories of search; both personal and mundane.
I witnessed myriad forms of love.
Some that killed each other in numerous ways, every day.
That murderous emotion still demanded the tag of love.
So did the ones that demolished others all around.

I could think of those times when I was fortunate enough to hear
something beyond "I am fine" ....
That word combination that should be sued for most gross destruction of truth in modern times!
And the times when I was unfortunate enough to understand some love stories as they should never have been understood.
Images of me standing up for others. Images of me failing myself.
The tables one could turn within a year (with big laugh!)
The chairs that still need to be shaken a bit.
But good to have a list!

As I start another year with some smiling faces to fill my eyes and a forehead to kiss,
Emerging from that much dreaded box, I look forward to paint another mural
That would fill this ever broadening horizon of life.....

Delirium

The other day I was reading about phantom pain.
Have you ever heard about it?
Its a pain in an organ or a limb that does not exist.
Sharp, intolerable pain.
Painkillers are required to manage it.
Some of us need low dose of electric shocks!
Anti-depressants and sleeping pills are prescribed too, says another journal.
What do these medicines actually help you forget?
That you have a pain?
Or they help you remember that you don't have the limb anymore?
You can not have the pain in a body part that does not exist!
It is gone!
Is it its last ditch attempt at being alive?
Why doesn't the pain sleep?

A friend once told me, women who undergo abortion,
Many a times remember the abortion date and every other detail attached to it.
She said, they also remember a probable date of birth of the child,
And often think how old they would have been, had they been given birth.
This is so even when they decide to undergo the abortion, themselves.
When they knew that was the right thing to do,
Given the age or the circumstances or the relationship.... or the lack of it!
They cant stop thinking about how it would have been.
My friend said, their partners often find this strange!
For they supported these women's decision to abort. Then why this mourning?
Why this relentless stream of memories, of the memories that never formed?
Is that ghost mourning then?
Why don't these memories fall asleep?

They keep me awake many a nights!
Phantom pains and ghost mourning ....
I remember things that should have been long forgotten.
Instead they fill my nights. Is it their last ditch effort to remain alive?
They don't mean anything, anymore!
I even wonder why they meant so much to me!

Why don't they sleep?
My head can then go silent. It is never silent.
Its much alike my street in all hours of the night....
Why doesn't my street sleep?
Why doesn't it let me sleep?

Insomnia! Is that what they suffer from?

A conversation....may be..

"Yes! I understand Sameer.
But what you need to understand, is that she does not love you."

"I know, Dr. Shom. She does not.
I have it clear in my head now.
I can’t make the same mistake again.
I know, when she told that she wants to sing me a lullaby by the sea shore,
She was just making a conversation.
When she told me,I was the only one with whom,
She wanted to travel to a faraway land,
Although, many had proposed the same, earlier.
It must had been a light-hearted comment!
I am the one who took it seriously.
She must had been a little high, tipsy as they say,
when she shared minutest details of her life with me.
When she promptly said, she wanted to be that lone branch under me,
As I pointed at a picture and said that bird could be me........."
"Sameer! You are not listening to me.
She does not love you!
I have talked to her.
Do you want to be called a stalker?"
"No. Definitely not. I know I can not follow her.
I have never, actually and you know that.
Don't you Dr. Shom?
However it feels now that I did.
And I am sorry for that. Truly sorry.
Because I was not sure she did not love me, when she asked if I could love her dad!
She felt no one ever loved her Dad, except her.
She wanted to make up for....I dont know what!!
But she wanted me as a partner in loving her dad.
I was not sure then that she did not love me!
I was not sure that she did not love me,
When she said everyone leaves her like a rental flat,
And this repeated so many times
That she was certain she was a nom de plume for a prostitute!
She cried out loud!
And it seemed she needed an activist. A personal one for herself.
No...don't laugh! She indeed....
I was not sure she didn't love me,
When I caught her sipping from the straw I left in my soft drink bottle.
I was not sure when she wanted to see me one last time after every last time....."

"Mr. Sameer....."

"Wait! You have said it already!
I know what you would say again...
She does not love me.
I know.
You have told me so!
She has told me so!
She said, she never did.
I remember every word of it.
She said, she did not even consider me a man. Ever!
I was this sexless, perhaps faceless person.
I will always remain that
I truly don't know anymore if I know what's love!
And I promise I would not follow her,
But will you hear me out if I say,
I have felt loved more than ever, all those months she did not love me
Will you Dr. Shom?

And probably that's why I need you...."

Dreams are not real

Dreams have no connection to reality.
Almost never.

In my dream this morning, you came to meet me by the river.
We sang lalit as the sky got lit slowly...
It was elaborate ...
Unhurried, unrestrained...
I looked at you as I saw the morning star.
I was relieved.
It felt I don''t have to worry about you going away anymore.
I smiled in my dreams,
I somehow always knew you would stay.
I know dreams have no connection to reality,
When I woke up, my phone beeped to remind your imminent departure

Dreams are not real. They are never.
In my dreams you reach out and hold my hand,
When I feel scared, but still try to show a brave face.
When we bend forward together,
to see the road ahead through darkness...
You kiss my temple.
In my dreams,
You hold my uncertainty in your strong certain palms.
Dreams are never real, because I know,
You have not found your certainty. Not yet.

In my dreams, you often agree to close your eyes.
You want to rest your head on my shoulder.
Breathe deep and let me hear your breathing,
For hours...
I know dreams are never true,
When we meet, you talk non stop!

Dreams are indeed not real.
In my dreams I swim like a swan through all the suds
And often agree to suspend disbelief.
In reality I stumble too often, choke, and struggle to keep afloat.

Dreams have nothing to do with reality.
In my dreams, you never leave my side.
In reality, I do not meet you for years!
